The Medical Harmonica, featured videos, news, songs, tips and more. In over 34 years at the Ontario Aerobics Centre, Dr. John Schaman has seen over 45000 patients for cardiac rehabilitation and sports medicine. As a physician he was alarmed to learn that it is accepted as statistically normal to lose 50% of lung function between the ages of 30 and 70. It has been generally accepted that those using their lungs in more “extraordinary” ways such as breath-hold divers, opera singers and horn players have less deterioration with aging. The harmonica, because it is the only instrument that utilizes both inhaling and exhaling to create sound, was brought to his attention as a potential means of reducing and possibly even reversing this alarming trend.
